Terrace Trivia and Answers DID YOU KNOW ? 1. How long is the Skeena River? The second largest all-Canadian river in British Columbia, the Skeena River is 350 miles in length. Its source is the Skeena Mountains, the delta is the Pacific Ocean, at the 54th parallel, and the drainage is 15 thousand square miles. The Skeena River was first named in a map in 1867. However, in 1872, the Hudson’s Bay Company marks the river as ‘Simpson’s River’. In the 1879-80 survey map of the area, the river was marked ‘Skeena River’ with a comment in brackets (K’shien of the Tsimshian Indians.) In 1911, the Geographic Board Report officially adopted the name Skeena River. Early surveyors said this about the ‘river of mists’: “Constant rise and fall in water level – in the Canyon, as much as 17 feet in 24 hours. Brown, dirty water. Swift, treacherous, but navigable. Never gives up its dead.” 2. When did the Hudson’s Bay Company begin Trading with the First Nations people on the Nass River? In 1831, the Company built a trading post, known as ‘Fort Point.’ The generation of First Nations people who remembered the first “Omukshewas,” or white men, have almost all passed away. Many are buried on the site where the fort once stood. The site is know called ‘Cemetery Point’ and forms the ‘God’s Acre’ of the Kincolith Mission Station./font> 3.Who was Gimpy? Gimpy was Terrace's very own Kermode bear, or Spirit Bear. He was injured in an accident, and walked with a pronounced limp, hence the name. Gimipy loved to pose for photos, and could be seen along the Nass Highway, north, towards the Lava Beds. Gimpy now walks without a limp, with his Spirit Bear ancestors. He is missed. 4. What did Fred Bohler do? He owned one of the first farms in Dutch Valley. Mrs. Bohler was originally a Lever from Ontario, and came to Terrace with her four children: Annie, Jim, Tom and Cecil Lever. 5. What did Edna and Bob Cooper receive in 1995? The Order of British Columbia. Edna Cooper was a town councillor from 1968 to 1972. She and husband Bob own West Kalum Logging Ltd. Bob’s father was Sid Cooper, who was District Forest Ranger from 1923 to his retirement in 1953. Edna’s family, the Toops, arrived in Terrace in 1943. They have four children: Arlene, Julia, Virginia and Robert. 6. Who started the first dairy in Terrace? Billy West owned Morningside Dairy – he came to the area in 1906. Another famous dairy was Frank’s Dairy, owned by Henry Frank. One of the first white settlers in the area, he arrived in 1895. His wife Mattie and four children Luelle, Ivan, Floyd and Belle arrived by paddlewheeler in 1908. The Franks operated their dairy across from the present site of Skeena Sawmills for many years. 7. What was the name of Fred Hall’s wife? Cassie. In 1929, Cassie Hall and Kate Braun started the first library in the Old Great War Veterans Hall, which Cassie ran until 1944. Mrs. Hall served on the Terrace School Board for 16 years, and in honour of her service, Cassie Hall School bears her name. 8. What did Emanual (Emil) Girtsen Haugland do for 40 years? He cut hair. He also served on the Village Commission for 24 years. Emil moved to Terrace in 1924 and worked as a logger until an injury forced him to change occupations. He was Terrace’s barber from 1927 until his retirement in 1968. 9. What Terrace pioneer arrived in town via snowshoe? George Little. Terrace’s founder snowshoed over the Kitimat Trail in 1905. He owned a store in the early years, and sold it to another pioneer family, the Kenneys, in 1912. 10. What was a ‘happy day’ in 1929? The day Dr. Stanley Mills arrived in Terrace. Dr. Mills was a true country doctor. He operated on kitchen tables, and treated badly injured soldiers under trees on Lakelse Avenue. Dr. Mills and his wife Jean [Parker] lost their lives in a house fire and Mills Memorial Hospital carries his name. 11. Name the day Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip visited Terrace. Saturday, July 18, 1959. Queensway Drive in Thornhill was named after her visit. 12. What resort was ‘hot’ with visitors and locals alike? Skoglund Hotsprings, now known as Mount Layton Hotsprings. Developed by Ray Skoglund, who owned Skoglund Logging. Ray is now 85 years old, and lives in White Rock. His daughter Alice still lives in Terrace. His other children are Joan, David and Caroline. 13. When did Terrace’s first radio station hit the airwaves? In the late 50’s. Owner J. Fred Weber also started television for the Pacific Northwest. CFTK Radio and TV are still making noise along the ‘Tall Totem Network.’ 14. What much loved schoolteacher was awarded Citizen of the Year in 1981 and Freeman of the City in 1989? Vesta Douglas. A schoolteacher from 1951 to 1975, Vesta’s life long hobby has been working with young adults. She is a dedicated member and great supporter of The Greater Terrace Beautification Society. 15. What happened to young Heinz Wickmann on July 19, 1959? He caught the world title Chinook salmon on a rod. It weighed 92 pounds. 16. What did Walter A. Yeo, Bill McRae and Vesta Douglas do for the citizens of Terrace? They raised $650 thousand dollars to build the Terrace Arena. [Thanks!] Once the arena was completed, they ‘sold’ it to the city of Terrace for one dollar. The arena officially opened on January 19, 1973. (Rich Green deserves special mention for his dedication to the project.) 17. Who built the Terrace Hotel? J.K. Gordon built the Terrace
Hotel in 1912.
18. What was Riverside School made from? Army Huts.
19. What does the word "gyiik" mean? Mosquito in Tsimpshian. [Ed. note: The mosquito is sort of the official 'winged beast' of the area. Anyone who has lived in Terrace will understand!] 20. Who is the lady that 'watches' over Terrace? Sleeping Beauty Mountain, which resembles the provile of a sleeping woman. The mountain was adopted as an official place name on June 2, 1950. 21.Who was the first ISP in Terrace? First ISP in Terrace was skeena.net - July 1995-Second ISP was Kermode.net-Oct 1995 Kermode.net bought skeena.net in May 1996.
